GOD IS BREATH Cultivating a Loving Relationship with the God Reality
with Sheikh Muiz Brinkerhoff
Experience some of the fundamental Sufi teachings and practices that are included in the God is Breath Study and Practice Program developed by Murshid Wali Ali Meyer. Sheikh Muiz, one of his long-time students, will share a series of these core teachings and practices that deepen our experience of Breath, Fikr, Heart Awareness, and Tasawwuri Murshid. Cultivating loving relationships with the Illuminated Souls and the One and Only Being is one way to "make God a Reality",
"This is the whole of the inner methodology of the Sufi Path in a nutshell … we use this loving connection with the Source as the vehicle of our growth, and we continue to imagine and have our notion and feeling for what God is, evolving along with our own development of our inner consciousness and feeling and heart nature.” Murshid Wali Ali Meyer
About Muiz:
Muiz Brinkerhoff, from Northern California, was initiated into Ruhaniat Sufism in 1975 and recognized as Sheikh by Murshid Wali Ali and Pir Moineddin in 1996. As one of the first openly gay/queer-identified men to be recognized as a Ruhaniat leader and guide, his easy reception by the Teachers Circle and his matter-of-fact manner of being himself has encouraged other LGBTQ+ guides to come out. He continues to offer supportive role modeling for younger LGBTQ+ community members to feel welcome in our lineage.
Over the past 43 years Muiz has led the Dances and Sufi Practice around the USA, in the UK, Netherlands, France, Morocco, and South Africa. He combines a variety of embodied spiritual practices with methods of identifying and healing shadow issues and not taking the limited self so seriously; in order to cultivate a radiant attitude, an inclusive Heart, increase empathy, kindness and gratitude; and practice Presence.

Week 2: Murshid Wali Ali's Answer to a Question (This is Murshid Wali Ali's response to a question asked in the video recording of Class 10 of the God is Breath course, about losing connection to the meaning of the words, and just saying them anyway) 1. What I do if I'm saying words over and over a. and they don't mean anything to me, i. I try and find a way to change what I'm saying ii. Because [otherwise] there's no point in it. 2. and if I'm working with "Toward the One", a. and it becomes totally stale b. and I could be saying, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. c. You know, whatever, d. I think about, what is this thing supposed to do? e. What am I supposed to get by doing this? 3. And what I get is, a. oh, I'm supposed to remember. b. I'm not separate from the One. c. I'm not making this up. This has happened to me, you know? 4. So then instead of when I'm out there breathing, Toward the One, a. and not knowing what I'm saying, b. I'm breathing, thinking, with each breath i. oh, remembering the One, ii. remembering that I'm not separate from the One iii. remembering that Oneness, iv. remembering, Non-separated Oneness, v. which is what you're saying, you know, c. I mean, you are That, but you forget it. 5. So, if you emphasize where you've forgotten that you're a part of it a. You're saying I need to go toward it. b. Then that's the spiritual path, you know, c. to overcome limitation and become awakened, d. so take it where it means something. e. Take the words to where it means something, 6. the words are just where you begin. a. and then you go to the essence of the words, b. then you have the fikr using the words. c. I mean you have you say them aloud, d. then you say them, on the breath, with the fikr, e. and then you just go into what it means. f. it means, with each breath, remembering. i. I'm the One ii. I am in the One iii. there is only the One, iv. I'm an aspect of the One. v. The One is overcoming my idea that I am separate g. that's what you're doing. 7. So, you don't have to put it into concepts, a. Just do it. Just do it with each breath, b. Just be with it, be with Oneness in this breath, c. And then be with Oneness in this breath d. You take it instead of saying I'm not doing it right. i. You're taking it to a higher level. basically, ii. because you're taking it right into the secret of the fikr (fikr as-sirr) iii. We don't want to get trapped by any concepts, iv. No matter how good they may be or v. How well we might be able to defend them in a debate, you know, vi. Because Essence is beyond all that
